Philips - Brighten up with Mirror Lights

Good morning readers!

It's Tuesday and we're back from holiday!
Still moody over the weekend and holiday?
Fraid not because today we are going to share about Mirror Lighting.

Definition:
"Lighting up your mirrors is a simple process, and will make your daily beauty regime a breeze."

The best way to light a mirror is from the top and at the sides, using overhead and side lights respectively. This eliminates all shadows and provides the best lighting for the face. Furthermore, your light beams from the tops and sides of the mirrors should converge in a focal point, preferably at the middle of the mirror. The best kind of light to choose is often a frosted glass tube, which will dissipate sidewaves.

When choosing a mirror light for your bathroom, a waterproof light is strongly recommended. Apart from the wide range of designs available, Philips also adheres to strict safety standards of water resistance for the bathroom collection. Each myLiving Aquafit light comes with an IP (Ingress Protection) rating to indicate its degree of moisture resistance, so users can choose the right light for the right place.

Philips - Fixed Recessed Downlights (part 2)

Definition:-
"Recessed downlights are designed to maintain a good level of light in the room and draw attention to a focal feature in the space. There are four distances in which a downlight can be utilized. Width matters in each of these instances."

Beam Width:-
1) Fixed recessed downlights are available in beam angles between zero and 60'
2) They can be set very close to a wall to pick out texture.
3) Light can be used to create a pool of light on the floor.

"A downlight highlights a point of interest in the room. A downlight that is positioned directly over an object will cast strong light at the top of the object and allow for natural shadows under the object. You can opt to use this method to highlight a wall with textured tiles to expand the sense of space, light up corridors and hallways, or highlight art work and floor details. The possibilities are endless!

When highlighting a particular art piece, a single, wider beam of light should be used. If the art piece is set in a wall niche, a recessed downlight set within this niche will provide strong, reflective rays to illuminate every part of the display object.

When  highlighting textured tiles or a wall-mounted painting, opt for a row of spotlights with thin beams, set close to the wall."

Philips - Recessed Directional Spotlights (Part 1)

Good afternoon readers!

Today we're going to share about recessed spotlights.

Definition:-
"Directional spotlights create a cone of light to effectively create highlight and focus on artworks in the room. The baffle is how deep a bulb is set into the fixture, and a deeper set baffle will ensure that there is the least amount of glare from light, so your room remains soothing and comfortable to the eye."

"Recessed directional spotlights have different beam widths, and are used for different purposes. For example, use a spotlight with a wider beam angle to highlight a bigger area or a feature wall. A spotlight with a narrow beam angle can be used to highlight smaller paintings or artwork. It is also important to choose the correct beam angle for desired accent.

"Spot lighting allows you to create light textures in your room, for example, wall scallops and ceiling sparkles. The play on light intensity and shadows makes for a gorgeous ambiance. With flexible spotlights you can control beam direction to place artworks at the desired position."
(adapted from "Principles of Good Home Lighting" booklet, by Philips)

Beam angles in directional spots:
1) 40' for accent lighting
2) 90' wall wash
3) 120' general lighting or wall wash
4) 145' smooth or gentle wider wall wash

Philips - Understanding Task Lights

Good morning readers!

The sharing today is about understanding task lights.

"In the study, a bright desk lamp is a valuable addition. Make sure that this is not pointed directly at the computer screen, as its reflective glare can be straining to the eyes.

Place two wall-mounted bedside reading lights with flexible heads to ensure you are able to carry out tasks such as reading without disturbing your partner. To create a warm atmosphere, try a floor standing light which allows for freedom of placement. You could choose compact LED spot lights for the closet or a dark corridor.

Under-cabinet lights are useful in the kitchen. They are space-saving, convenient and will help light your working space, a necessity when you concentrate on a task at hand. This is especially important when working with knives or other dangerous cooking utensils."

(adapted from "Principles of Good Home Lighting" booklet by Philips)

When using task light, it is quite flexible. Depends on what space you're using.

Philips - Highlight with Wall Lights

Good morning readers!
It's another Tuesday morning and hope that everything will be just fine you over there.

Today, we're going to explore more on different lighting options, wall light, is yet another option for your solution.

"As these are usually directed upwards or downwards, they are suitable for even lighting, highlighting an architectural feature, to decorate a plain wall or pick out structural details. In doing so, they open up the room's space.

Wall mounted lights can also add accent lighting elements to the home. These add depth and texture to simple or feature walls. For example, wall mounted uplights allow the ceiling to appear higher than it is, and wall mounted downlights add an element of drama."
(adapted from "Principles of Good Home Lighting" booklet by Philips)

There are different beam angle and choices when choosing a wall light, the designs include:
1) Straight up narrow
2) Wide wash up
3) Straight up and down
4) Straight down

Decor with centerpieces, ceiling lights and suspension lights!

Good morning Monday!
It's second week of September, still great start ahead!

Today, we're going to share on exploring different lighting options.
To start off, it's about centerpieces, ceiling lights and suspension lights.

"A centerpiece shows a glamorous and sophisticated feel, and such a light sits well in a living space and entrance hallways. The light from this fixture will reflect off the ceiling to create a sense of space.

A hanging pendant is easily visible when someone enters a space. Some pieces are best hung on their own; some smaller fixtures can be grouped and hung at different heights over dining tables.

Where the ceiling is low, a ceiling-mounted fixture is preferred over suspension lights or centerpieces as it takes up little precious room space."

Philips - Principles of Good Home Lighting

(Google Image - for illustration purposes)

Good afternoon readers!

While having a break at this hour, here's some quick share.

Part 3:
Going for Area-specific Lighting

"It is important to determine the purposes of each room before lighting principles can be applied. Lighting for every part of the home should be practical and atmospheric."

Living Room - Consider the living room to be the nucleus of your home. It will be where loved ones gather for some quality time, a place to unwind and relax at the end of the day, and on weekends, perhaps even a space for activities like reading or sewing.

Dining Room - Light can make a good dining experience delightful. The dining room should be home to various forms of lighting. For example, general illumination above the dining table should highlight the food and table arrangement. The dining area should be lit with warm white light that is close to daylight so as to show food in its true color.

Kitchen - Kitchen lighting should be bright and shadow free. This is to ensure the safety of your loved ones working in the kitchen. It should also enhance the joy of cooking. It is important to choose lights that help your eyes pick out food colors and textures correctly.
Well positioned ceiling recessed lights and spotlights will reduce shadows.
Linear lighting is another functional yet stylish option in the kitchen lighting. The bright and glare-free fluorescent light is energy efficient and can aid in lighting long kitchen platforms evenly. These are also cleanable luminaires.

Bathroom - Bathroom lighting should be relaxing. Choose spotlights to complement this, so you will be able to carry out task oriented activities with ease.
Light your mirrors with color-correct lights as you will need them to pick out accurate skin tones for makeup application and other personal care.
Wall lights in the bathroom can add pretty accents to the room's ambiance, and can be used with mirror lights to remove shadows on the face.

Bedroom - :Lighting in the bedroom should be soothing, soft and warm. Combine wall lights, overhead lighting and reading lights to help with different activities in this personal space. Dimming these lights can create a more romantic atmosphere when needed.

(adapted from "Principles of Good Home Lighting" booklet, by Philips)

Different part, different demand on lighting.

The sharing today is about "Good Home Lighting".

Part 1:
Purpose & Positioning
"To decide the location of light sources, one should identify the purpose of the room and the activities likely to take place in it. One should  also think of desired ambient quality before conceptualizing lighting plan. For example, a living room meant for intimate family conversations and lounging would need warm lighting. However, a room used for reading and playing card games would need a brighter light. Furthermore, lighting should also bring attention to display pieces in the room, such as beautiful painting or feature wall. To fulfill all the needs above, light sources have to be placed at different locations and at varying intensities."
(adapted from "Principles of Good Home Lighting" booklet by Philips)

Part 2:
Light Layering
"Light layering is one of the techniques to create different moods and to perform different tasks. The four types of lighting to utilize when layering are GENERAL, TASK, ACCENT and AMBIENT lighting."

General Lighting provides an even distribution of light in a room. It should complement the amount of natural light in the room during the day, and compensate for the lack of natural light in the night. Usually, general lighting comprises of a ceiling-mounted light which is practical and sufficient for the eyes to function.

Task Lighting allows for an increase in productivity and concentration. It usually comes in the form of bright lamps that aid in activities like studying, working or reading.

Accent Lighting also known as decorative lighting, emphasizes beautiful aspects of the home. Usually, accent lighting takes the form of spotlights to highlight a feature wall or photo montage. It can also be a decorative lamp that brings out the home furnishing.

Ambient Lighting allows one to change the moods of a room to suit any occasion. Ambient lighting can transform the look and feel of a space by displaying with color intensity and shadows. This is especially useful as one does not need to change or modify the interior of the home.
